Alternative fuels and Powershift
London car drivers should choose their next car carefully to avoid congestion charges.
Car emissions and the vehicles which cause them are facing increasing pressure from the government and other areas. The UK government has already used hikes in fuel duty, increases in fuel benefit charges, and changes to company car tax based on emissions.
At the same time the government is prepared to hand out money to help drivers reduce their car costs. Amongst the incentives to promote use of vehicles with lower emissions are:
| 1 | Low duty on lpg fuel. | ||
| 2 | Enhanced capital allowances on cars emitting up to 120 gco2pkm | See list | |
| 3 | From May 1st 2002, VED reduced by £30 on above cars. | ||
| 5 | Potential local government initiatives such as a full reduction in congestion charges for Powershift approved vehicles. | Link to TfL |
Using the latest data from Powershift, Comcar users can now incorporate discounts from London congestion charging in their car selection criteria. Other cities may follow the same policy, possibly as part of the 'Alter' plan which includes 30 other UK cities. Use the Comcar car chooser to list up to ten vehicles.
Notes:
Comcar only lists current cars. See the
PowerShift Register for details of older cars. It is important to check
that the precise model or kit is specified and obtain agreement before purchasing
the vehicle.
